ElliQ: An in-home healthcare and social companion for older adults

With the transition toward value-based care, coupled with the impacts of the pandemic, now more than ever, healthcare providers desperately need a virtual care solution to help them monitor, support, and communicate with their older adult patients remotely. Unfortunately, due to the digital divide, many seniors tend to have a harder time adopting virtual care solutions, as these solutions are not tailored to seniors’ unique needs and preferences.

ElliQ®, an AI-driven tabletop digital voice companion, is there to fill the void when older adults enter the home. ElliQ provides a hybrid approach to care, combining AI with direct and indirect patient-provider contact, thus augmenting and enhancing providers’ overall quality of care. After the extensive research and deployment of ElliQ over the past three years, our team learned how to create a device that older adults welcome into their homes and use frequently, one that builds a unique bond with each user, built on empathy and trust.

Using Intuition Robotics’ cognitive AI engine, Q, ElliQ understands if, when, and how to effectively interact with older adult patients, proactively engaging and guiding them through a variety of health and wellness activities based on their personalized care plan, defined, monitored, and guided by their primary care practitioner (PCP).

These activities include, among others:

• Healthcare - Medication management, communication with care team, remote patient monitoring (e.g. BP, glucose), reminders, appointments
• Wellness - Physical exercise, stress reduction, health content, nutrition and hydration, cognitive stimulation

ElliQ also gathers self-reported data from patients (on their mood, pain levels, and sleep), and supports patients’ social well-being via rich, personalized conversations, thus alleviating feelings of loneliness and isolation when they’re at home alone for long periods of time.

On the provider’s end, ElliQ is fully customizable, and can easily be configured based on each patient’s unique condition(s) and prescribed care plan. After defining ElliQ’s care objectives, providers can track and monitor patients’ real-time data and overall progress via an online dashboard. They also receive custom alerts (based on anomalies, alarming results, changes to the patient’s routine, etc.), which can be used to take immediate, actionable steps, allowing for early intervention as needed.

ElliQ bridges the gap between providers and care teams and their senior patients throughout the day, giving them the ability to continuously monitor patients, ensure care plan compliance, and improve the quality of their care, while reducing costs and hospitalizations, and improving patients’ overall health outcomes.
